A School Built to Say Exactly What Each Course Does — and Does Not — Teach

How Synthara Lab Came to Exist

Synthara Lab was put together by a small group of engineers and curriculum designers who had each, at various points, enrolled in or reviewed AI courses that described outcomes without describing workload, prerequisites without being specific, and assessment methods without explaining what passing meant in practice.

The decision to start a separate school came from a straightforward observation: the information a prospective student needs to decide whether a course fits their current stage is rarely the first thing shown. Contact hours, self-study hours, prerequisite level, and assessment format tend to be buried or omitted entirely. The reading strip — a fixed metadata bar at the top of every course card — was the first structural decision made before any course content was written.

The school is based in Subang Jaya, Selangor. It has operated since 2022, initially offering only the weekend workshop before expanding to the thirteen-week reinforcement learning course and the enterprise retainer.

What We Are Trying to Do

Each programme at Synthara Lab carries an honest scope paragraph — a short statement of what the course does not cover and why. This is not a disclaimer. It is a navigation aid. A student who reads that the weekend workshop teaches one path end to end and leaves alternatives for longer courses can decide whether that matches their situation before they pay.

Assessment in the RL Fundamentals course includes a written account of what did not replicate in the final reproduction study. This reflects a position: understanding why something fails to reproduce is as important as getting it to work, and it should be measured accordingly.

Synthara Lab does not claim to cover everything in the field. The scope of each programme is narrow by design. A narrow course that states its boundaries is more useful than a broad course that implies coverage it does not provide.

The Instructional Team

Three people are responsible for curriculum design and delivery at Synthara Lab. All have practitioner backgrounds alongside teaching experience.

Ahmad Hafizi

Lead Instructor — ML Engineering

Designed the workshop curriculum and leads the weekend sessions. Previous work includes tabular modelling for supply-chain optimisation in the Klang Valley.

Siti Rahmah

Instructor — Reinforcement Learning

Developed the RL Fundamentals course. Research background in policy gradient methods, with a particular focus on evaluation under stochasticity and benchmark reproducibility.

Enterprise Programme Lead

Manages the enterprise retainer engagements, including curriculum tailoring, code review clinics, and quarterly capability reporting for organisational clients.

Published Syllabi

Every programme has a published syllabus with week-by-week topics, reading references, and assessment criteria. These are available before enrolment, not after.

Honest Scope Statements

Each programme states explicitly what it does not cover. This is reviewed whenever the course is updated to ensure the stated exclusions remain accurate.

Data Handling — PDPA Compliance

Participant and organisational data is handled in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Data collected for course administration is not used for other purposes.

Quarterly Curriculum Review

The enterprise retainer curriculum is reviewed and refreshed each quarter. The RL Fundamentals course content is reviewed annually against the current published literature.

Named References for Benchmarks

Where course content references safety considerations or governance practice, the source is named. Benchmark limitations in the RL course are covered with references supplied, not summarised without attribution.

Enterprise Retainer Scope Contract

The enterprise retainer agreement clearly states what is covered — teaching, engineering practice, and process design — and what is not, including production systems responsibility and regulatory assessments.

AI Engineering Instruction in Malaysia — Our Position

The demand for AI engineering skills in Malaysia has grown across the financial services, manufacturing, and technology sectors over the past several years. Much of the instruction available in the region focuses on output — on what a model can do — without spending equal time on what a student needs to know before starting, how long the work will take, and what the course leaves unaddressed.

Synthara Lab's position is that the instructional design decisions — what to include, what to exclude, how to assess, and how to describe the programme honestly — are as important as the technical content itself. A course that oversells its scope does practical harm to the people who follow it.

The three programmes at Synthara Lab cover a narrow range of the field deliberately. The weekend workshop covers one path from a raw tabular file to a documented model. The RL Fundamentals course covers thirteen weeks of material with assessment by reproduction study. The enterprise retainer covers teaching and engineering practice for organisations.

None of them claim to be comprehensive. Each one states what it leaves out. That is the approach, and it applies equally to how we describe the school itself.
